Dalmatia islands

Brač is with an area of 396 square kilometers the largest island in Dalmatia, and the third-largest island in the Adriatic Sea overall. Brač has a long and folded coastline with numerous smaller and larges bays. Particularly noticeable are the natural harbours of Supetar, Splitska, Pučišća, and Povlja, Sumartin, Milna and Bobovišća.

Čiovo is located in central Dalmatia, protecting the town of Trogir and Kaštela gulf. On its northern part it is connected to the mainland with a two bridges, one bridge is in the old centre of Trogir, and actually Trogir spread itself onto the island. Besides the portion of Trogir, on the island there are several villages: Arbanija, Žedno, Okrug Gornji, Okrug Donji and Slatine.

Cres is an Adriatic island in Croatia. It is one of the northern islands in the Kvarner Gulf and can be reached via ferry from Rijeka, Krk island or from the Istrian peninsula (line Brestova-Porozina). In the past, Cres and the neighboring island of Lošinj used to be one island, but now they are divided by a channel and connected by a bridge that starts from the town of Osor.

Drvenik Veli and Mali are islands in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea. They are situated in the middle of the Dalmatian archipelago, northwest of Šolta, 1.8 kilometers from the mainland. The highest peak is 178 meters high. The coast of the islands consists of many sand and pebble beaches.

Dugi Otok is located off the Dalmatian coast, west of Zadar. It is the largest and westernmost of the Zadarian Islands, and derives its name from its distinctive shape: it is 44.5 km long by 4.8 km  wide. A nature park, Telašćica, covers the southern part of the island and is adjacent to Kornati Islands National Park.

Hvar is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, located off the Dalmatian coast, lying between the islands of Brač, Vis and Korčula.  Its hillsides are covered in pine forests, with vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards and lavender fields in the agricultural areas. The climate is characterized by mild winters, and warm summers with many hours of sunshine.

Ist is a small island off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. The closest city to Ist is Zadar. The Croatian Government is attempting to attract people to the island through its National Programme of Islands’ Development as well as economic revival (which could result in the construction of a bridge to nearby Molat). Recently the island has benefited from the development of tourism. 

The island is situated between Ugljan on the north-east and Dugi Otok on the south-west. Iž, like the other islands of Zadar Archipelago, lies in the direction northwest–southeast meaning it is parallel with the mainland. Iž is surrounded by more than 10 very small, uninhabited islands, the largest of which is Knežak.

The island of Korčula belongs to the central Dalmatian archipelago, separated from the Pelješac peninsula by a narrow Strait of Pelješac.Main settlements on the island are towns of Korčula, Blato and Vela Luka. Villages along the coast are Brna, Račišće, Lumbarda and Prižba; Žrnovo, Pupnat, Smokvica and Čara are located inland. The climate is Mediterranean.

The Kornati archipelago of Croatia, also known as the Stomorski islands, is located in the northern part of Dalmatia, south from Zadar and west of Šibenik, in the Šibenik-Knin County. With 35 kilometers in length and 89 islands, some large, some small, in a sea area of about 320 square kilometers, the Kornati are the densest archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea.

The island of Lastovo belongs to the central Dalmatian archipelago. Thirteen kilometres south of Korčula, the island is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the Adriatic Sea. The Lastovo archipelago contains a total of 46 islands, including the larger islands Sušac, Prežba, Mrčara and an island group called Lastovnjaci on the eastern side.

Lopud is a small island off the coast of Dalmatia, southern Croatia. Lopud is economically the most developed of the Elaphiti Islands, and can be reached by boat from Dubrovnik, Trsteno, Orašac and Zaton. The island is famous for its sandy beaches, in particular the bay of Šunj. Lopud is the second largest island of the Elaphiti islands, between Koločep and Šipan.

Mljet is the southernmost and easternmost of the larger islands of the Dalmatia region of Croatia. The National Park includes the western part of the island, Veliko jezero, Malo jezero, Soline Bay and a sea belt 500 metres wide from the most prominent cape of Mljet covering an area of 54 km2. Mljet lies south of the Pelješac peninsula, from which it is divided by the Mljet Channel.

The island is in the northwest part of the Šibenik archipelago, separated from the mainland by a 20 m wide sea canal at Tisno which is spanned by a short draw-bridge. The southwestern coastline is predominantly steep slopes divided by many sandy coves. The island has many rocky beaches, as well as several sandy ones.

Pag belongs to the north Dalmatian archipelago and it extends northwest–southeast along the coast, forming the Velebit Channel. The island has an area of 284.56 square kilometers and the coastline is 269.2 kilometers. It is around 60 kilometers long and between 2 and 10 kilometers wide. The southwestern coast of the island is low, and the northwestern is steep and high.

Pašman is an Adriatic island off the coast of northern Dalmatia in Croatia with an area of 60.11 km2, located to the south of Zadar, surrounded by the islands of Ugljan to the northwest, Iž to the west, and Dugi Otok and Žut to the southwest. Among all islands in the Croatian archipelago, it is Pašman that has the biggest green surface considering its total area.

Prvić is a small island in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea. It is situated in the Šibenik archipelago, about half a mile from the mainland, in the vicinity of Vodice. The whole island is under the protection of the Croatian Ministry of Culture since the island is considered a cultural heritage. Tourism is the most important economic branch on the island.

Šolta is situated in the central Dalmatian archipelago, west of the island of Brač, south of Split and east of the Drvenik islands. On the north-eastern coast of the island there are the large bays of Rogač and Nečujam. The main fishing center is Maslinica, which is exposed to only north-westerly winds, making it a good shelter for smaller boats.

Ugljan is a Croatian island and the first in the Zadar Archipelago. It is located northwest of the island of Pašman and southeast of the islands of Rivanj and Sestrunj. Separated from the mainland by the Zadar Channel, it is connected with the island of Pašman by the Ždrelac Bridge spanning over the Ždrelac Strait. Port in Preko has ferry connections with Zadar.

Vir is an island on the Croatian coast of the Adriatic Sea with an area of 22 km2. It lies in Dalmatia, north of the city of Zadar. It is connected to the mainland via a road bridge. The main village on the island is the eponymous village of Vir. There are two more villages, Lozice and Torovi. Vir is a tourist hotspot.

The farthest inhabited island off the Croatian mainland, Vis has an area of 90.26 square kilometers. Its highest point is Hum, which is 587 meters above sea level. The island's two largest settlements are the town of Vis on the island's eastern side (the settlement for which the island was originally named) and Komiža on its western coast. 

Vrgada is an island off the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea. It is located halfway between Zadar and Šibenik, in the archipelago northwest of Murter and south of Biograd na moru, 2.5 nautical miles from the mainland. The only settlement on the island is also named Vrgada and is surrounded by pine forest. On the northeast coast, there are several small coves.

Zlarin is a small island off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia near the mainland city of Šibenik. Zlarin has a myriad of fig and cypress trees, and other natural plants. Inner parts of the island are uninhabited and covered with thick forest. Zlarin is one of few islands on the Adriatic Sea that do not allow access to cars.

Biograd na Moru is located 28 km south from the county capital, Zadar. It is situated on a small peninsula between two small bays: Soline to the south and Bošana to the north. It is located on the Adriatic Sea coast, overlooking the island of Pašman, on the road from Zadar and Sukošan towards Vodice and Šibenik.

Cavtat is a village on the Adriatic Sea coast 15 kilometers south of Dubrovnik. Cavtat is a popular tourist destination. There are several beaches in Cavtat and its surroundings, among them Pasjača, as well as Ključice, Obod, Rat, and Žal. It was named the most popular honeymoon destination in Europe for 2023 by European Best Destinations.

The Dalmatian Hinterland is the southern inland hinterland in the historical Croatian region of Dalmatia. The name Zagora means "beyond (the) hills", which is a reference to the fact that it is the part of Dalmatia that is not coastal and the existence of the concordant coastline where hills run parallel to the coast.

Dubrovnik is a city in southern Dalmatia, Croatia, by the Adriatic Sea. The town is located northwest of the city of Split, west of Solin and east of Trogir, on the central Dalmatian coast. Knin is a city located in the Dalmatian hinterland near the source of the river Krka, an important traffic junction on the rail and road routes between Zagreb and Split. Knin has a modified Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and cool winters. Although the city is only some 50 km from the Adriatic Sea, the proximity of the Dinaric Alps to the north alters its climate.

Makarska is a prominent regional tourist center, located on a horseshoe-shaped bay between the Biokovo mountains and the Adriatic Sea. The city is noted for its palm-fringed promenade, where cafes, bars and boutiques overlook the harbor. Tourists also enjoy the atmosphere of ancient Dalmatian wine cellars, fresh fish and quality local wines, a blend of the ancient and the modern. Metković is a town in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County of Croatia, located in the southeast of the country, on the banks of the river Neretva and on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The geographical location of Metković, and the openness of the Neretva valley towards the sea, classifies it as a Mediterranean city with long, warm summers, and mild and rainy winters.

Omiš is a town and port in the Dalmatia region of Croatia, and a municipality in the Split-Dalmatia County. The town is approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Croatia's second-largest city, Split, where the Cetina River meets the Adriatic Sea. Omiš was well known in the past as a pirate city whose ships were built for attack and fast retrieval into the mouth of the Cetina River.

Opuzen is a small town in Dubrovnik-Neretva County in Croatia. The town is located 12 kilometers upstream from the mouth of the river Neretva, in southern Dalmatia. Starting from Opuzen, the Neretva river splits into twelve backwaters, which are a paradise for sport fishermen. Opuzen is known for growing quality vegetables and fruits, primarily tangerines and kiwis.

Pakoštane is a village and a municipality in Croatia in the Zadar County. It is a tourist town with many gravel beaches and pine woods. To the north of the town is the Lake Vrana Nature Park, a favorite picnicking site, abundant in freshwater fish. Further north of the lake, 6 km from Pakoštane, is the historic settlement of Vrana.

Pelješac is a peninsula in southern Dalmatia in Croatia. From the isthmus that begins at Ston, to the top of Cape Lovišta, it is 65 km long. The Pelješac Bridge spans the sea channel between Komarna on the northern mainland and the peninsula of Pelješac, thereby passing entirely through Croatian territory and avoiding any border crossings with Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum.

Pirovac is a coastal municipality and village in Croatia. It is located on the Adriatic Highway, 23 km northwest of Šibenik, on the coast of the Pirovački Bay. Along with Primošten, Vodice and Murter, Pirovac is the most important tourist center of the Šibenik Riviera. Tourism is the basic economic activity. It is decorated with several valuable cultural and historical monuments.

Ploče is a town and seaport in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County of Croatia. It is located on the Adriatic coast in Dalmatia just north of the Neretva Delta and is the natural seaside endpoint of most north-south routes through the central Dinaric Alps. This makes it the primary seaport used by Bosnia and Herzegovina and the endpoint of the Pan-European corridor 5C.

Trogir is a historic town and harbour on the Adriatic coast in Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia. The historic city of Trogir is situated on a small island between the Croatian mainland and the island of Čiovo. It lies 27 kilometres west of the city of Split. Since 1997, the historic centre of Trogir has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

Crikvenica is a city in western Croatia, more precisely in the Kvarner Bay. Crikvenica is within easy reach of visitors from Central Europe. The Old Town is located on the hill, and the other part of the town below it is known as Podlabin. The national road connecting Rijeka and Pula passes through Labin. The nearest airport is in Pula and is 40 km away.
