Šibenik – A City of Rich History and UNESCO Heritage

Situated on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, at the very mouth of the Krka River, Šibenik is a city whose history stretches back almost a thousand years. It was first mentioned in 1066 in a document by the Croatian King Petar Krešimir IV, which is why it is often and proudly called Krešimir’s City.

Over the centuries, Šibenik has played an exceptionally important strategic and maritime role. Its position between the mainland, the sea, and numerous islands shaped the city and its architecture, as well as the specific lifestyle of its inhabitants. Today, this history is best felt in its streets. Narrow stone alleys, hidden squares, magnificent palaces, and fortresses bear witness to the different eras the city has gone through.

At the very heart of the historical core dominates the Cathedral of St. James, one of the most valuable monuments of Renaissance architecture on the Croatian coast. Built from 1431 to 1536, the cathedral has proudly been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000.
